This happened to me a few times already.
Everyday when I first log in the website I see my Karma, today it started at 482. On my next visit it drops one point and on my third visit it drops one point, again.
Leaving me with 480.
I always lose 2 points.
It's not the first time I've seen it. Just curious if it's been happening to other users and why it's happening.

That's strange, it's supposed to be the opposite. Usually, if you visit the site, you earn 1 point. The current threshold is set to 1 point per hour, so if you visit the site three times a day, with more than one hour between each visits, you should earn 3 points.

Aren't you upvoting stories during your visits? That would explain why your karma is decreased.

It should also be noted that upvoting stories cost karma, Lamernews was implemented this way.

Oh okay, that explains it them.
Yes, I've been upvoting stories.
But shouldn't it be the other way around?
I mean doesn't that discourage people from upvoting stories they like?

I think it is to reduce frivolous upvoting. Ascribing a cost to upvoting means users will be more choosy with what they upvote – similar to downvoting on SO.

I believe this was part of the idea when Lamernews emerged. In fact, when you upvote you are not really "losing" karma, you are transferring points to the poster of the upvoted news.

Ultimately though, one shouldn't take karma points too seriously :)

I've been losing karma lately as well without down- or upvoting. I checked my postings and comments too and they haven't been downvoted either.
