There's a chrome extension for Hacker News that I can't live without. It basically has a button that will mark all as read (visited) and a checkbox that when checked hides all that are read (visited).

May I suggest that you take this on as a programming challenge? Having an "itch" to scratch and the ability to do so with code is not something to take for granted.

Would be nice if you just built it into the site and I didn't have to download a chrome extension but I digress..
