It seems that as the site keeps growing, we are becoming a more attractive target for spammers. However, I will not tolerate this and will keep doing the usual stuff, deleting account and banning domains until they give up.

When you encounter some spam links, please downvote them so they do not appear on the front page. Adding a comment mentioning it's spam helps as well, thanks to all who have been doing that, especially @sbruchmann and @gotofritz.

Thanks everyone!

Two ideas:

– You could delay the first submission of a new account until it is approved by a moderator.

– Each item could have a link for marking it as spam.

The idea of a "report spam" link sounds interesting.
Perhaps, if the account that posted the alleged spam article was recently created and the article was reported by at least certain number of users (4 users or something), the article could be automatically hidden from view, until an admin manually approves it, or delete it. But instead, if the person has certain reputation, then, it will only be a flag for the admin to check, and will not be automatically hidden.

The idea would be to have the ability to hide the spam articles as fast as possible, but at the same time, prevent the possible abuse of the "report spam" link, to hide articles that some people could just don't like.

(That last part may sound weird since echojs is not a politics site, but remember how passionate some people get about things like the whole semicolons debate!)

Interesting idea. There could also be a threshold of (e.g.) 3 reports before something is declared spam.

Hopefully, having to submit one valid JS link before one can post freely will also make it much harder to spam.

I am not sure if this is an anomaly or by design, but I downvoted three spam articles recently and seem to have lost 10 reputation for each downvote. If by design, this is a disincentive to downvote.

A "report spam" link would be better, as calling out spam is really a different intent than downvoting.

I agree. I am constantly hovering around the 30 reputation score below which I cannot downvote anymore.

Should we follow a similar process for users posting inappropriate comments?
fcambus 3160 days ago. link 4 points
Absolutely! Keeping the place tidy and friendly is the absolute priority :D

Jumpin in late, but having the "recent" article pages have a rel="nofollow" until they've seen 3 upvotes may be worth it too, real spam will likely be reported before sufficient upvotes... maybe requiring a certain karma from posts before being able to upvote articles? Just a few thoughts on this one.

Instead of downvoting maybe add a "Report" option

Hey! I want to report that, at least at this moment, the rss feed is still showing that ted cruz spam link, even if the article was already deleted!
chris-l 3160 days ago. link 2 points
That Ted Cruz link still on the rss feed. Echojs is still advertising that site right now.
fcambus 3160 days ago. link 2 points
This should now be fixed, thanks for reporting.

Could you define the rules, which you follow to detect spammers? The post of my friend was deleted and I disagree with that.
I know only one thing, I'm a developer - PHP, JS, Java and so on. I'm not a spammer. If you think in different, please define the rules. Let's everybody knows the rules of this site.
